2021 - 2022 WASEA Executive Board

Thank you to those who voted within our 2021-2022 Executive Board Elections! Below we are introducing our newest officers for the 2020-2021 Executive Board who will begin their duties on July 1st, 2021. 


President: Shelby White, Pepperdine University (California)

Shelby White currently serves as the Director of Student Employment at Pepperdine University located in Malibu, California. Shelby oversees a team of five colleagues who manage all aspects of on-campus student employment and community-based federal work study programs, including over 1,800 student employees in 250+ departments. She truly enjoys connecting with students and supervisors on a daily basis and ensuring a positive student employment experience on-campus.  Shelby has worked in the field of Student Employment for five years and has been a member of WASEA for the same amount of time. Her background is in Career Counseling and she finds great joy in assisting students with finding employment opportunities that promote career development, skill acquisition, and personal/professional development. Shelby earned her Master’s in Counseling and College Student Personnel from California Lutheran University in 2018 and completed thesis work on Student Employment and the impact it has on low-income and first-generation college students. She also obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from California Lutheran University in 2015. In her free time, you will find Shelby hiking with her dogs, trying out a new carb-based recipe in her kitchen, reading the next Goal Setting book, and spending time with close friends and family.

President-Elect: Tanisha Bahar, Orange Coast College (California)

Tanisha Bahar is the Director of Financial Aid at Orange Coast College. She has been in higher education since 2008 where she started in the Office of Instruction at Mt. San Jacinto College. After two years, working in various roles, she decided to go back to school and pursue her Master’s Degree; thinking moving into the Financial Aid Office while going to school would be a slower pace. Boy was she wrong! Although, this is where her love for financial aid began.

Tanisha received her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration  from the University of LaVerne and an MBA from the University of Redlands. She has also earned several professional credentials from NASFAA U.  She currently serves as the Region VIII Segmental Representative for the California Community College Student Financial Aid Administrators organization.

Tanisha resides in Southern California with her three children, three dogs and three cats.


Secretary: Aurie Clifford, Pima Community College (Arizona)

Aurie has been an employee of Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona for the past 12 years.  Currently, she is the Assistant Director of Title IV Compliance in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. This position entails she oversees all the Title IV programs including, but not limited to, the Federal Work Study program.  As a lifelong learner, Aurie is interested in higher education and has earned four degrees in her career, the first one being an Associate's Degree in legal assisting where she learned she has a love of interpreting the law and creating policies and procedures.  She then pursued an Associate's Degree  and Bachelor of Science in Business Management, and finally a Master's Degree in Education. During her career, she has worked in various Human Resources roles and Financial Aid roles.  She loves to volunteer in state, regional and national associations in both the financial aid and Human Resources arenas.  Teaching, learning and presenting are a passion for Aurie.  


VP of Conferences & Awards: Alena Hume, Washington State University (Washington)

Alena Hume is the Student Employment Coordinator at Washington State University and oversees all of the National Student Employment Week Events, Career Fairs, JLD program, and serves as the Handshake administrator for her campus. As a current member of WASEA, her dedication to celebrating student employees’, planning events, and honoring students has been a privilege. She is excited and honored to set into this role as it combines areas that she loves: event planning and honoring the incredible work that students do for our institutions and community. 

VP of Professional Development: Angela Varner, Orange Coast College (California)

Angela Varner currently serves as a Financial Aid Fiscal Specialist at Orange Coast College located in Costa Mesa, California.  Angela has had the privilege to be a part of several positions within the Financial Aid office, which include, Financial Aid Assistant, Financial Aid Specialist and Financial Aid Fiscal Specialist.  While in her role as a Financial Aid Specialist she was introduced to the Federal Work-Study program.  She gained a passion for student employment and helped her institution change and grow this very important program.
